The Department of Geology, in association with IQAC, conducted a field trip to Ambalavayal, Wayanad, with the primary objective of studying about the Granite Intrusions and extensive shearing in the area. Students of First, Second and Final year B.Sc. Geology participated in the Field Trip. Mr. Riffin T Sajeev, HOD, Department of Geology, Mr. Pratyush K, Assistant Professor of Geology and Mrs. Kadeejath Huda, Assistant Professor of Geology supervised the field trip.

The group Reached Ambalavayal at approximately 10:00 AM IST and conducted their first field work at Phantom rock, Ambalavayal. Phantom Rock is a metamorphic pedestal rock that is shaped as such, due to intensive aberration by wind. The group then travelled to Lake Quarry, Ambalavayal. Lake Quarry is an abandoned granite quarry at the northwest corner of Ambalavayal. The group studied structures that marked Shearing in the area and also, the several granite intrusions of the region. Mr. Riffin T Sajeev explained how to spot shearing in such regions and how to apply a brunton compass to calculate Dip and Strike of a region. Samples of several granitic rocks as well as minerals were collected from the region for further testing.

During the afternoon session, the group visited Edakkal Caves, a huge cave system that looks over the landscape, used by natives of the Indus Valley Tribes. The group studied several geological formations in the area. The trip ended with a visit to Karapuzha Dam, a dam that generates energy from the Karapuzha Reservoir. The group returned to the institution after a successful field visit, at approximately 11:00 PM IST.
